Recap

Hansley Segai scored a hat-trick for the Chagos Islands as they recorded their first victory for nearly three years when they beat Surrey 3-2.

Surrey had twice come from behind through goals from debutantsNathaniel Williams and Liam Roberts but moments after Roberts made it 2-2, Chagos won a penalty that Segai made no mistake in converting to win the game for the visitors.

The hosts named seven debutants in the starting line up with Steve Beckett, Roberts, Rory Lewis, Williams, Nyam McLeod, Jack Moore and Jason Nwachukwu all getting their first cap.

Surreyforced a great save from Ivan Antalika early in the game but it was Chagos Islands had the ball in the back of the net on 13 minutes but the goal was chalked off for offside. Two minutes later Guillaume Augustine shot wide for the Islanders who were enjoying some early possession.

On 23 minutes, Chagos took the lead when Segai grabbed his first of the afternoon. He managed to collect the ball inside the area and drill the ball low into the corner of the net past Kevin Wheller.

The lead didn’t last long and Surrey got themselves back into the game with a well worked goal. Jay Jones did well on the left wing and he fired in a low cross and Williams was inside the six-yard box to bundle the ball over the line.

Surrey could have been ahead two minutes later when a quick throw in fooledthe Chagosdefenceand Jason Nwachukwu tried his luck from outside the area but it fizzed just wide of the goal.

The hosts made their only available substitution at halftime as ‘keeper Wheller made way for Giordano Zabotti for his Surrey debut.

Nwachukwu had a great chance to put Surrey ahead but his effort didn’t hit the target after he worked a bit of space inside the area.

However it was Chagos who were to score next when Segai exploited a gap in the defence and raced through on goal. Zabotti did well to come off his line and block the ball but the rebound favoured the striker to tapped into the empty net.

Despite tired legs and no options from the bench, Surrey continued to push for an equaliser with a succession of corners and half chances. The equaliser came on 74 minutes when Chagos could only clear a corner as far as Roberts on the edge of the box and he hit an absolute rocket into the top corner for 2-2.

Buoyed by the goal, Surrey went on the attack again and possibly threw too many men forward and Chagos attacked on the break. With Surrey on the back foot, midfielder Jack Moore had done well to recover but in a last ditch attempt to win the ball, he pushes the Chagos attacker in the back, leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot. Segai stepped up and completed his hat trick with a well-struck penalty to put the visitors in the lead for a third time.

In what was turning into a thrilling encounter, Surrey rattled the crossbar just a minute after conceding. Nwachukwu got himself into a shooting position and he was unlucky to see his shot beat Antalika but bounce off the crossbar and away.

Chagos defended their lead well in the final exchanges despite Surrey skipper Felix Ahorlu going close with a chance in the 89thminute. As the final whistle went, Chagos celebrated like a team who hadn’t won in years, leaving Surrey with two defeats from three since their debut match last year.
